The importance of gut health

There is a lot of talk at the moment around gut health and the microbiome, and for good reason, recent research shows gut health to be incredibly important to a persons overall health.

Did you know that the majority of your immune system is in your gut, 70% in fact? I first found this out in 2015 when I went to see my doctor with tonsilitis, the gut health was so poor (in my case from eating foods containing dairy and gluten) it had led to an unbalanced number of gut bacteria and it was dragging down my immune system.

As you like to know, our gut is made up of good bacteria and bad bacteria. When the balance becomes tipped in the favour of the bad due to numerous reasons, such as diet, lack of sleep, stress, too much exercise, medication use.

Gut health can lead to a number of issues, feeling sluggish, food intolerance's, GERD, heart burn, constipation, diarrhea, leaky gut, weight gain, micro nutrient poor absorption which can lead to deficiencies in key requirements such as Iron.

Do you suffer from any of these issues? There are a couple of options to think about, you can do the SMART DNA test on your microbiome and see for sure exactly what is happening.

Or you can DIY and start a gut health detox program which includes some everyday simple supplements to repair your gut, avoidance of some of the key inflammation inducing foods, short term for most, but long term for some. But it inst simply a dietary approach, you will also need to consider your stress levels, your sleep habits, exercise and in some cases simplifying your life. This won't happen over night but it will happen.

Fix your gut first, then focus on the other issues with your health. To solve any problems, you first want to have a good immune system, and the digestive system working correctly to remove the waste from our body when we lose weight, reduce toxic load of heavy metals and improve our micro nutrient intake.
